Mid-Year Update May 2022
Sustainability Update
Since the Shelter started with sustainability projects in 2016, so much has been accomplished. Today the Children’s Home is almost 75% self-sustaining. The Children Home has developed a large farm growing, using and selling onions, tomatoes, lettuce, corn and other vegetables. Avocado trees were planted and will yield avocados this year.
Over 90 bee hives are currently in operation with more planned. Honey is in high demand and a bigger seller. Also with the new honey warming equipment, more sales are anticipated.
A Sustainability Center was built to process, clean and store the vegetables and honey.
So many other projects have been completed. Solar panels were installed to generate energy and reduce electricity expenses. Hydro-gas initiative was complete to fuel the kitchen oven and stove. This eliminates wood burning and its ill effects such as heavy soot and smoke. A hydro-gas extractor is now being used to capture by-product waste to use as fertilizer in the farm.
THANK YOU SUSTAINABILITY DONORS!!

The fashion show raised over $100k for educating the Shelter college students for the next two years. Doug, a long-term leader in supporting the shelter, was instrumental in introducing people to the Children’s Shelter and spent countless hours supporting and raising funds. Around 2018, the boys‘ dorm burned down. For several years, the boys spent their time sleeping 4 to a single bed and/or on the floor in classrooms. the Doug Millham Boys‘ Dorm was opened with bedrooms, toilet blocks, lounge area and a kitchen/dining area. Jackie Millham attended the opening ceremony in her late husband’s honor.
