Africa Sustaining Angels
Our mission is to change the lives of vulnerable children in shelters throughout Africa.
Our Misson
We believe that every child, no matter where they are born, deserves access to education, sanitation, and a high quality of life. That is why we support shelter homes in Kenya as they develop sustainable practices to support their children

Our Story
Africa Sustaining Angels started with a trip to Kenya. When the group of friends visited the Shelter Children’s Home, they met and were blown away by a Christian Kenyan woman named Mary. One trip led to another trip, which led to another trip which led to many more trips, each time engaging more with Mary and the children.
Mary Muiruri is the founder of Shelter Children’s Home in Ngong, Kenya, just outside Nairobi. Mary was an accountant, whose grandmother, on her deathbed, challenged Mary to take care of Kenya’s vulnerable children. Mary took in 2, then 3, then 7 and today has 150 under her care on a 20-acre parcel of land which was given to her in a raw state by the government.
From Survival to Sustainability
When we first met Mary, she was 100% dependent on donations. She had no other means to take care of the children. For ten years, she spent the majority of her time telling her story and asking for donations. Relying on consistent and sustained donations year around was unpredictable and not reliable. She had to feed, educate, shelter and provide medical treatments for 150 children as well as to build rough facilities including an outdoor kitchen, sleeping rooms, and outdoor toilet/shower area.
In 2016, all that changed when HRSTrueHope stepped in and created a new operating model. Africa Sustaining Angels was formed to partner with HRSTrueHope and support the Shelter Children’s Home. Money raised would go to fund sustaining projects--projects that Mary identified to generate funds and end the dependence on continued soliciting of donations.
Today Shelter Children’s Home is almost 75% self-sustaining! Current sustaining projects include a large farm, honey production, cow project, water project, biogas project and a solar project. By implementing these projects, the shelter not only has a more reliable source of income, the children are learning life skills.
In addition, capital projects were funded for the construction of a Sustainability Center for the storing and processing of honey and vegetables as well as a boys’ dorm (no more sleeping 4 boys in a single bed!), classrooms, toilet blocks and a kitchen/dining area.
Africa Sustaining Angels consist of a group of people committed to helping Mary achieve the dream of sustainability in order to raise, educate and prepare these beautiful children for a better life.
The goal for Africa Sustaining Angels and HRSTrueHope is to take the lessons learned and expand to other shelters throughout Kenya and Africa.
